Y Chromosome Testing
A Y-Chromosome Test (Y-STR Test) is used to determine if selected males share the same paternal lineage.
The Y-Chromosome is inherited and passed on from father to son through the generations and, since it has a relatively infrequent mutation rate, will remain the same through many generations. It can be broken by the birth of a daughter but if a direct male line can be concluded then all males in that direct male lineage will have the identical Y pattern; therefore, the Y-Chromosome can be used to test lineage in males.
When Can a Y-Chromosome Test be Used?
- If you need to confirm a biological relationship and the father is absent or deceased, by using the Y-Chromosome test you are able to test any of the males on his side of the family.
- If siblings (brothers) are looking to find out if they share the same father, a Y-Chromosome test can be used to establish lineage.
- Male cousins can use it to see if their fathers were brothers or to check if they shared a common Grandfather through the paternal line.
- In Immigration cases, one can use the Y-Chromosome test to prove a biological relationship between males sharing the same male lineage.
- In adoption cases, children searching for their biological or “birth” families and a can use a Y-Chromosome test as a final step in locating relatives
