Glossary term for Y-Chromosome Test

Y-Chromosome Test

The Y-chromosome is solely found in males.  Males have a Y-chromosome paired with an X- chromosome.  The Y-chromosome makes up only about 2% of the total DNA in a human cell.  Given that this chromosome is only found in males makes it invaluable in establishing relationships between males in Relationship DNA Testing. Ancestry is mapped with the help of this chromosome using Y-STR testing. This chromosome sets off development of the testis in males and is also the chromosome responsible for male fertility.  Geneticists believe that originally the Y-chromosome was one of two identical chromosomes and a variation in alleles in an individual brought about the Y-Chromosome.
